Free Help Available at Diabetes and You 2012

Hayden – If you’re worried diabetes is in your future, you can find out free of charge at Diabetes and You 2012, a North Idaho Diabetes Coalition prevention and awareness fair on Nov. 17.

Bring a Medicare card or proof of private insurance to the free event at the Panhandle Health District, 8500 N. Atlas Rd. in Hayden, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The pre-diabetes testing analyzes biomarkers in the blood to rate your risk of developing diabetes within five years.

Dr. Justin Rader, D.D.S., the chief dental officer at the Dirne Community Health Center, will explain how diabetes raises the risk of gum disease and other oral health problems. He’ll offer professional tips on how to prevent problems.

Trudy Snawder, a nurse with diabetes, will share her self-management and lifestyle strategies. Snawder will speak from experience about achieving good glucose control, overcoming fears about diabetes and finding resources for diabetes support. She belongs to the A1C Champions® Program, a patient-led diabetes education team through Sanofi.

The Lion’s Club will sponsor a holiday cooking demonstration that follows the balanced Idaho Plate Method. Medicine Man Pharmacy will provide pharmacy students to answer your questions about your medications. Bring a list of your medications with you.

The diabetes fair will include free blood pressure checks, foot checks and glucose meters. Medicine Man Pharmacy also will conduct A1C testing for people with diabetes. The tests will produce a snapshot of blood sugar levels for the previous three months.

Participants will have a chance to win door prizes, take home recipes and taste food samples. The Panhandle Health District participates in the North Idaho Diabetes Coalition with the University of Idaho Extension, North Idaho Head Start, Dirne Community Health Center, American Diabetes Association, Medicine Man Pharmacy, Lions Club, Fresenius Medicare Care, Masi Medical and Sanofi Diabetes.
