2-1-1 Idaho CareLine connects Idahoans to low-cost health and human services
Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter has proclaimed Feb. 11, 2014, to be 2-1-1 Idaho CareLine Day, recognizing the vital work of Idaho’s toll-free information and referral program. The 2-1-1 Idaho CareLine offers Idahoans resources and guidance in accessing low-cost health and human services in their area. It is part of the Department of Health and Welfare.
In 2013, Idaho CareLine facilitated more than 150,000 calls, providing information including utility assistance programs and connecting individuals in crisis to an appropriate hotline. Although 2-1-1 does not provide any direct assistance, there are thousands of programs throughout Idaho that do, and 2-1-1- is charged with getting callers to those places.
“2-1-1 offers Idahoans an opportunity to get connected to community resources that may be available to them as they face a crisis,” says Alex Zamora, 2-1-1 Human Services Program specialist and supervisor. “We often get calls from individuals who don’t know what may be available to them, and our information and referral specialists can help guide them to a needed resource.”
2-1-1 Idaho Careline is staffed from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding state holidays, and has a statewide database with more than 4,500 resources.
Idaho joins other 2-1-1 programs around the country in recognizing the free, user-friendly phone number that serves 90 percent of the American population, and connects some 16 million people a year to critical resources, information and services.
