Get a Kit, Make a Plan, & Be Informed

During a public health incident, access to food, water, daily medications, and other resources may be limited. Individuals, families, businesses, and communities can prepare for all public health emergencies, including pandemic influenza, bioterrorism, and natural disasters by following a few simple steps.

Get a Kit Get a kit. Emergency preparedness kits contain supplies you may need during a public health emergency. At a minimum, you should have a three day supply of food and water with one gallon of water per person per day. Other basic items you may want to include in your kit are first aid supplies, a flashlight with extra batteries, prescription medications, and a battery powered radio. Remember to check your emergency preparedness kit when you change your clocks for daylight saving time. You can learn more about items to include in your emergency preparedness kits in the resource column on the right.

Make a Plan Make a Plan. You may not be with your family or loved ones during a public health emergency. By making a plan in advance, you can decide how you will contact one another, how you will get back together, and what you will do in different situations.  Depending on the incident, you may need to plan for staying where you are or evacuating. Identify an out-of-town contact and make sure everyone can get in touch with that person. Business, individual, and family emergency plan templates can be found in resouce column.

Be Informed Be Informed. While creating an emergency preparedness kit and making a plan can lessen the impact of an emergency, it is important to learn about the types of emergencies that can occur in your area. Stay informed about public health threats that may be common to your area and how you can prepare correctly. Find out what emergency plans are in place in your school, community, and workplace. You can learn more about specific public health hazards on this site.
