Family Supports

Health and Welfare encourages and participates in the Family Supports Program.  This program is intended to promote and enhance a family's capacity to provide care for family members with developmental disabilities by assisting parents, guardians, or family members in maintaining them in their own homes.  Family Support is intended for families of individuals who are institutionalized or families of individuals for whom institutionalization is imminent, and who will, as a result of the Family Support grant, return or keep their family member home.  It provides funds that can be used to purchase:

  • Respite care
  • Specialized evaluations
  • Adaptive equipment
  • Therapies
  • Transportation
  • Specialized clothing
  • Housing modifications
  • Related services

Additionally, Family Support is intended to help families prior to a crisis to prevent the need for an individual with a developmental disability to move to an institution or residential placement outside the family's home.

Families are encouraged to use existing sources of assistance but Family Support can be used when other resources are not available.  Funds are limited, however, and might not always be available.  Click on the following links for additional information:
