The Importance of Belonging by David
Pitonyak
Dr. Pitonyak's work emphasizes the impact of loneliness and lack of
connectedness with others on people with disabilities (actually, on
everyone). This article is lengthy; however, as professionals in the
disability service system, Support Brokers should take the time to
review this simple, but profound article. Dr. Pitonyak summarizes
the personal feelings that providers often experience when working
with people with disabilities. How these feelings impact "the work"
is important and should not to be diminished. Support Brokers who
employ Dr. Pitonyak's strategies will create stronger and more
dynamic Circles of Support.
