SELF-DETERMINATION AND PEOPLE WITH SEVERE DISABILITIES

Disability advocate, Michael Wehmeyer presents eight misconceptions commonly made about individuals with significant disabilities and their ability to be Self-Determined. All people regardless of ability have the right to make choices according to their personal preferences.  Often, to determine the preferences of people with severe disabilities requires that we pay close attention to their behaviors and/or other unique forms of communication.

WRONG RIGHT!
graphics In order to be Self-Determined, a person must be able to do tasks independently. graphics Self-Determination is for anyone no matter the severity of their disability.

graphics Self-Determination means the individual must control all aspects of his or her life. graphics Individuals, regardless of disability, provide direction - that is being in control.

graphics Self-Determination is about being successful. graphics Self-Determination can involve risk, sometimes a plan of action might not work out. When that happens, the plan must be adapted.

graphics To be Self-Determined, a person must be self-sufficient and rely only on themselves. graphics All people live interdependent lives; individuals with disabilities are no different.

graphics Before being Self-Determined, a person must have all of the skills necessary to be independent. graphics Individuals with disabilities benefit from the skills and resources available in their communities that support their choices and needs.

graphics Self-Determination is a program a person can sign up for. graphics Self-Determination is a value set or way of thinking. All individuals benefit from Self-Determined living.

graphics Self-Determination is the same for everyone. graphics Being Self-Determined is a unique creation of each person; it looks different from person to person.

graphics Self-Determination is about making choices. graphics Honoring choice is an important component of Self-Determined living. However, authority, support, responsibility, and confirmation are equally important.

People with significant disabilities can be Self-Determined. Having a wrong or incomplete understanding of Self-Determination can severely hamper its implementation. As a Support Broker, your understanding of the Self-Determination principles is crucial to your future employers' success.
