PURPOSE
To identify the code of ETHICS and Professional Responsibilities Support Brokers and other providers must adhere to when delivering appropriate, needed and beneficial supports to participants in the My Voice, My Choice program option.
1. Identify key ethical components that guide the behavior and
attitudes of the Support Broker.
2. Describe the potential impact on individuals with disabilities
who are met with unethical behavior.
3. Identify circumstances that you might find disagreeable and
brainstorm ways to handle delicate situations. There are no
right or wrong answers.
INTRODUCTION
As an advocate for people with disabilities, you are likely to face
situations that push your professional and ethical boundaries. Circumstances
will arise where someone will disagree with a choice your employer
makes and consequently create a road block. You may be pressured
to take sides as you mediate disagreements and attempt to find
solutions. You are first and foremost an advocate
for the adult with a disability; however, family and friends may
be critical supports and their concerns should not be dismissed.
Being a Support Broker requires professionalism, problem-solving,
and mediation. The job also requires that you understand yourself
and your boundaries. As a Support Broker, you may be asked to help
facilitate an activity or lifestyle that goes against your value
set. When these circumstances arise, you must honor the voice and
choice of your employer while at the same time honor your own ethical
standards. The ultimate
goal is for the adult to live the life they chose with just the
right amount of supports. That is what we all want. Your job is
to help make that happen without crossing legal, ethical, and professional
boundaries or alienating significant people. (This is a tough road
to hoe, but well worth the endeavor.)
