CDC Enhanced Precautions - Thursday, December 19, 2019

We are getting a lot of questions on implementation of Enhanced Barrier Precautions in Nursing Homes.  The enhanced precautions from the CDC are not a requirement at this time, rather a potential standard of practice from a nationally recognized source.

The following is a link to FAQ’s from the CDC;

https://www.cdc.gov/hai/containment/faqs.html

Should a facility choose to implement Enhanced Barrier Precautions as a component of the Infection Control program, we would suggest the following steps:

  • Approval by the Medical Director, QAPI program
  • Development of Policy and Procedure, potentially updating the facility assessment
  • Staff training
  • Monitoring of the implementation and outcomes

At some point this may need to be implemented as part of your Infection Prevention program but not at this time.
