TAFI assistance for Caretakers

You can receive TAFI assistance in the form of a caretaker relative grant if you are responsible for a relative child's care.

Relative Caretaker or Grandparent Grant

The TAFI Grant, also known as the Relative Caretaker or Grandparent Grant, provide eligible households up to $309 per month to help offset the cost of caring for a child. Caretakers must be related, and income criteria is based on the child’s income.

Eligibility

After the department has established relationship status, individuals can receive the relative grant to help offset the cost of caring for the child. The relative child’s income and resources cannot go over the income and resource limits, but the adult relative’s income and resources do not count towards eligibility.

Relationships between the caretaker relative and the child(ren) on the TAFI program must be verified. Acceptable verification includes:

  • Parent or stepparent statement (to establish the child’s relationship to another relative only)
  • Legal documentation that establishes the relationship
  • Birth record
  • Marriage license
  • Divorce decree
  • Obituary
  • Baptismal record
  • School record
