The mission of the Idaho State Office of Rural Health and Primary Care is to promote access to quality health care for people in Idaho.

Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) Designations

 

The Primary Care Office develops and coordinates all HPSA designation applications in partnership with Idaho communities and the Department of Health and Human Services.

Federal designations establish eligibility for federal and state resources such as National Health Service Corps (NHSC) scholarship and loan repayment programs, the Medicare Incentive Payment Program, and Rural Health Care Access Program funding.

Once awarded, these federal designations last three years, and then the area or population needs to be assessed again to re-determine eligibility.

Health Professional Shortage Area designations are determined for areas, populations and facilities in the categories of Primary Medical Care, Dental Health and Mental Health.
