About Birth Records

The department issues certified copies of birth records of events that occurred in Idaho.

Overview

As a U.S. citizen, your birth certificate may be your most important document. A certified copy provides proof of citizenship and age, which are required to establish identification. You will need it for many things, such as applying for a passport or government benefits, enrolling in school, joining the military, or claiming pension or insurance benefits.

In Idaho, birth certificates are legally confidential for 100 years. Health and Welfare maintains birth certificates filed from July 1911 to the present.

Information about obtaining records for events in other states may be found at the National Center for Health Statistics
